Read Aloud

Test Format

The test takers are given a text on screen to be read aloud in 40 seconds. The text comprises a single paragraph and usually the entire 'Read Aloud' section consists of 7 paragraphs. The length of the paragraph is between 50 to 65 words.

Useful Tips

Eye contact

Never lose eye contact with lines, you are reading. Missing word/s or a line creates a bad impression and can embarrass you also.

Pitch, tone and pace

Control unnecessary variations in your pitch, tone and pace. The volume of your voice should neither reflect hurry nor calmness. Rather it should be natural and unaffected.

Stresses

Stressing words and phrases mean presenting a point of view emphatically. While reading the text you should be careful in putting stress on the right places and pronouncing words and phrases in louder tone. See the following examples and note how words have been stressed to express a particular meaning:

WHAT are you LOOKING for?
Are you living HERE?
Can I ask YOU a QUESTION?

Without Stresses

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had some cows, E-I-E-I-O.
With a moo, moo here and a moo, moo there,
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo,
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

With stresses

Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.
And on his farm he had a cow, E-I-E-I-O.
With a moo, moo here and a moo, moo there,
Here a moo, there a moo, everywhere a moo-moo,
Old MacDonald had a farm, E-I-E-I-O.

Practice 1

We arrived back home just after John. We saw him park by the back door, take something out of his saddle-bag and run upstairs in front of us with it. He went straight into the bathroom. As John ran up the stairs, Mum called after him, asking him if he'd enjoyed his ride. He answered that it'd been great, and that he'd cycled forty-three miles.

Although introvert and extrovert personality types differ from one another on various grounds, the major difference between the two is their source of rejuvenation. While for extroverts, this may mean interaction or excursions with friends and family, the same may mean reading a book or listening to music for introverts.

Practice 3

As soon as we had unpacked I would run down to the promenade and onto the beach. I remember the hours of fun I had with new friends playing football and cricket or even swimming in the sea, which was usually rather cold. It often rained, so I used to go to the pier or stay in the house exploring the enormous attic. I always had a really good time there.

Practice 4

He was really tall and the thinnest boy. His hair, which was extremely long, black and greasy, covered his eyes, and looked like a big Saint Bernard dog. In addition, he wore dirty, torn jeans and an old T-shirt which hadn't been washed for a long time. However, appearances are not everything. In fact, Jack was a beautiful person, always ready to help other people.

Practice 5

Footballers give a lot of pleasure to a large number of people. For example, in Spain when the national team wins a match, everybody celebrates and feels extremely proud. In addition, if a team wins, a lot of money is generated and the country is given a great deal of international prestige. Therefore, many people think that paying football players a high salary is worth it.

Practice 6

Diversity in the world makes it a better place to live in. It helps us in understanding the languages of different places and brings awareness about different traditions and ways of dressing up. We can learn more and more about the benefits of diversity by understanding and applying it on ourselves. Diversity is about valuing individual differences. It recognizes values and manages differences to enable everyone to be free.

Practice 7

We need to know the importance of peace education by learning to recognize personal approaches to conflict management, for example; avoidance, assertion and aggression.
